A friend who is now gone told me he remembered as a child of 10 or 11 watching the film with his parents and feeling he had been exposed as Gay. He never did come out to his family. I saw this movie for the first time only a few days ago, and I can't understand why this isn't widely known as one of the greatest entrances in film history.

Looking forward to this, and I hope more gay movies/shows are made after. My 6-year-old daughter wants to watch this over and over. My big concern is that I hope everyone who will see this realizes from the outset that this is set in 1968 and that the characters broadly reflect the lives and attitudes of gay men pre-Stonewall, and that some of the dialogue and character interactions arent going to be politically correct from a contemporary lens - especially with how they treat the overly effeminate character, as well as the single black character. I can already hear people my age (Im 26) crying about how this film “isnt racially diverse enough” and, if they familiarize themselves with the original film or read the play prior to watching this, they might be a bit more understanding.

School play quality vanity piece woth nothing new to say after William Friedkin's intimate film triumph.
Set as a "period piece" the actors pretend they are the actors from the original film.
Nothing visually daring, tepid performances that read like a high school performance of Our Town.
See the 1970 original. I read the screenplay which was published in book form decades ago-maybe in the mid-seventies-and recall finding it depressing.
Just finished watching this new Netflix film and must comment on the terrific casting and production-the clothing and set design were as "spot on" as possible, but more importantly the acting was superb. Each character was distinct and believable. The setting was close and intimate, but not claustrophobic. In revisiting this drama decades after first reading the screenplay, I would describe it as sad, rather than depressing.
Fortunately the LGBT community finds much more visibility and acceptance today. This production clearly depicts self-loathing, repression and invisibility felt by some in the sixties. A good period piece with some light moments, but still very sad.

Saw the movie yesterday and it was great. This guy has a very small role but He is so charming. I saw him for the first time and his twin in Desperate Housewives before Teen Wolf.

The fact that I saw the thumbnail and immediately I knew this was made by Ryan Murphy. There are more gays in some scenes of this than at an Ariana Grande concert. This is literally the most boring movie ever. And it literally seem like he got the same gay men that ryan Murphy has a hard on for. Remember TBBT the 100th episode: when Sheldon awedd on Zachary Quinto Version. Ahaaaaa. Alternative title: Ryan Murphy and his favourite gays. Really good analysis. Really brutal film. This was a brave play at the time it was written. It is very much a mark of its time but the raging anger of the play just doesn't hold up anymore.
The casting and all the rest of it are wonderful but the tone is now perfectly tired. The psychological deconstruction, the confrontation, the subtext, innuendo and contrivance has been done a jillion times since then and it's no longer that interesting.
I sat through it and enjoyed it for the acting and set design, directing, etc. but it's now just doesn't work nearly as well.

This film is so incredibly boring and not believable at all. Don't understand the high ratings at all. It is torture to sit through.
